Blog 1 - Lessons learned: How My Past Experience Shaped My Consulting Journey

Embarking on a journey into the world of consulting was not a decision I made lightly. I’m ready. But with everything I’ve done over the years, it wasn’t easy for me to find my niche. Most consultants I know or I’ve worked with seem to have figured this out, and I felt I needed to do the same. I finally figured that what makes me unique is my diverse background, a melting pot of interlocking experiences, invaluable connections and challenges that have profoundly shaped my consulting practice today.

The Early Days: Building a Foundation

My career began in the dynamic field of journalism and public relations, where I learned the importance of clear communication and strategic thinking. Navigating complex projects and managing stakeholder relationships taught me how to create compelling narratives and build trust—skills that are fundamental in consulting. These early days were crucial in honing my ability to listen, understand, develop ideas and address the needs of clients effectively.

Leadership Roles: Gaining Perspective

Transitioning into leadership roles within various corporate and social environments provided me with a broader perspective on business operations and management. Leading teams, driving projects, and making strategic decisions gave me firsthand experience in the challenges that businesses face. It was during this time that I developed a keen understanding of organizational dynamics and the critical role of effective leadership in achieving success.

Economic Development: Seeing the Bigger Picture

For over fifteen years, I was deeply involved in the economic development of my region. This experience was pivotal in shaping my approach to consulting. Working closely with small businesses and non-profits, I saw the direct impact of strategic planning and community engagement on economic growth. This period reinforced my belief in the power of collaboration and the importance of tailored solutions that meet specific needs.

Education Sector: Nurturing Growth

My nine-year tenure in the post-secondary education sector allowed me to contribute to the growth and development of future leaders. This role underscored the value of mentorship, continuous learning, and the transformative power of education. It also highlighted the need for innovative thinking and adaptability, which are crucial in today’s ever-evolving business landscape.

Women in Business: Addressing Systemic Barriers

Most recently, as the Project Coordinator at Women in Business NB, I had the privilege of working to address systemic barriers hindering women's advancement in leadership roles. This experience was both challenging and rewarding, as it required a deep understanding of the societal and structural issues at play. It reinforced my commitment to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of my work.

The Consulting Leap: Bringing It All Together

I must say that I feel equipped and inspired to bring my diverse skill set to a broader audience. The decision to launch Rioux-Walker Service Consult Inc. was the culmination of years of learning, growth, and a deep-seated desire to help others achieve their most ambitious goals.

Looking Ahead: A Journey of Impact

As I embark on this exciting new journey, I am committed to leveraging my experiences to provide top-notch consulting services in management, communications, and events. Guided by core values of Excellence, Integrity, Collaboration, Creativity, and Social Responsibility, I am dedicated to making a meaningful impact on the businesses and communities I serve.
